Painting Veritechs

Updated: Aug 2, 2024

Below are a few tips for how to paint Veritechs. Let's try some Robotech shall we?

Step 1: Construct and Prime

I will be using contrast paints here, but no need to buy the contrast primer (pricey!). A white prime will do.

Step 2: Apply Contrast Paint

I use Skeleton Horde contrast for the light brown. Key here is to make sure you get the lines and recesses between the panels. Do not worry about the pooling of paint in the flat areas. We will fix this in a moment (or not if you want to just keep as is). Make sure that the lines stand out here.

Step 3: Apply Brown Highlights

Even out the brown pooling on the panels by applying Base XV-88 (weird paint name I know). I mix a little of this with Ushabti Bone for a mid range color and then use pure Ushabti Bone for the edge. I highlight along the edges near the panel edges. Just focus on the areas that are most visible. I also go back and add a little bit of edge highlight with white in select spots. This is optional of course. Rough diagram of paint applications around the panels below.

Step 4: Add Contrast White

Add citadel contrast Apothecary White to the white areas. Like the brown above, concentrate on getting the paint in the recesses.

I also paint the cockpit in contrast white as well.

Step 5: Add White Highlights

Go back and touch up the white areas using pure white, Ulthuan Grey, and Celestra Grey. Base the black areas as well and add some edge highlights with a dark grey. Touch up accordingly.

Conclusion

Nothing earth shattering here as far as techniques go. The main point is using contrast pants as a way to quickly line the recesses between the panels. Edge highlighting to the most obvious areas and you are done. I would say these take about an hour and a half. As for the tiny details (logos, red lines etc) those will take time to get. Be patient with yourself and may the Force..er...Macross Way be with you!
