Bad Moons Yellow that 'Pops'

I get quite a few questions around what colors I use for the yellow. Its a pretty simple formula:

  • Prime white or light gray

  • Then mix Jokaero Orange into Yriel Yellow for the base coat (usually takes two coats. about a 3:1 Yriel/Jokaero ratio)

  • Blend up with yellow then yellow mixed with white. Then almost total white for edge highlights.

  • In the recesses I applied a agrax/fuegan orange wash mix (but scragg brown applied directly to the recesses will work too. I orginally did this, but a wash is faster to apply to the recesses.)

So that's it! Pretty straightforward. The biggest mistake I see here is with people priming the mini black. This will lead to nothing but pain and consternation as you apply multiple coats simultaneously draining your life energy. If you already have a black base, first paint a white coat over it. This will at least save you a few layers of yellow.

Love your yellow. Just finished a couple of boyz. Do you have any idea to use yellow constrast paint for a similar yellow-popping colour? Its a timesaver :)

Hi! Sorry about the delay.. still getting used to this website stuff! I haven’t used contrast yellow yet, but I’ve been using it as a base coat for my green and blacks then going back and touching up. I assume the same approach would work for yellow if you have the right colors to touch up with (imagine yriel yellow)
